Never underestimate the power of trying
How many times have you said or heard someone said “I am too scared to do this”, “I never did it”, or “There is no way I can do that” when trying a new thing?. Well, trying new things can be scariest things ever. The unfamiliar feelings combined with anxiety feelings would force us to back into our comfort zone. While it may not feel like it, this is normal feelings.
“People who engage in a variety of experiences are more likely to retain positive emotions and minimize negative ones than people who have fewer experiences.”
Overcoming the fear is not an easy feat but the reward itself sometimes really sweet. Let me tell you what my experience is about trying new things.
Have I am not trying to apply for my master scholarship, I would never know the feeling of rejection and how I am a persistent guy
Have I am not trying to learn piano, I would never know that I did not have music talent at all and not wasted my time there
Have I am not trying to sign up for a hobby club, I would not get my current job as a Data Scientist
Have I am not trying to write on Medium, I would never know that I love writing and financially helping me
And many more things that I could just keep listing on. Trying new things for me is the best thing that happens for me because it teaches me who am I as a person and leads me to a better place (as a person, career, or anything else).
Trying new things is also a form of positive therapy for me. There is a rush and refreshment when we trying something new. In the TIME article with psychologist Rich Walker, he said “People who engage in a variety of experiences are more likely to retain positive emotions and minimize negative ones than people who have fewer experiences.”
At the end of the day, there is nothing wrong with trying new things. Yes, it would often result in a failure and an embarrassment but every single experience is rewarding and who knows, it could lead you to a fruitful career, new love, or just positive emotions.
