Although Data Science is a new field present for some time, the buzz word has just become booming recently, mainly because of AI.
Many people come and go, trying their luck to find employment within the niche just for a better future career. While this is a motivation, IMO, this is not the best motivation to have when we want to have a career in Data Science.
Sure, money and career is something that we need to consider, but if this is our only consideration, then we would be stuck in a fast-changing field with little motivation. There is also a better alternative for the Data Science job with a somewhat similar skill set and an easier time to find employment, e.g. Data Engineer, Data Analyst, Business Intelligence.
In my case, why I want to work in the Data Science field instead of any other kinds of employment? There are several reasons:
I Love Experiment with The Data
Data Scientist is nothing without the experiment; we might working in the industry, but the data is our experimental subject, and we need to create the experimental design.
Data Science in Industry is still a new thing, so there are many chances for us to get our hand dirty in trying out new stuff. If you do not like to experiment with the data, it might be hard for you in the long run.
I Love Reading
This might look like a hobby rather than something we find useful in the Data Science job, but no; Data Science is an ever-growing field; every day, I witness new technique born and old concept refurbish.
Reading is the only way to get first-class access to all this new information. If we are missing out, even just for a second, we might be too late to apply it to our company, and the competition would already have the leads.
Data Science is a field for people who want to read; this also serves as a warning for people who want to enter this field. Do you want to read every day (This is an exaggeration, of course) to work in this field? Well, I do.
I Love communicating Uncertainty.
What is that supposed to means anyway? Communicating uncertainty? Is that even a term? Well, I write it.
As we know, Data Science is a field that not only working with data and machine learning modelling, but we also work with all these business people; and it means we need to communicate our result.
The business old-style way to look at the data is by looking at the number or statistic to decide. They never knew what a machine learning model is and how the result could be interpreted.
How we bridge the gap between business people and technical person? By education, of course. This is what I love to do. Creating a way where non-technical person understand what we do is part of the Data Science job and would always be.
Uncertainty could become certain by breaking down your complex machine learning model's barrier into a word that normal people understood. You could use feature importance, machine learning explanatory, or simple statistic that represents the model.
Above is my top three motivation why Data Science, and why not the other Data Employment. Your motivation might be different from mine, but if you really want the Data Science job or simply already in one, you never gave it up.
